"Plant-based" is quite the buzz term, zipping around nearly every industry you can think of. You've seen it on makeup and food labels, promoted on Instagram by your favorite food blog, and it's the premise of the new café down the street. But those labels and ads don’t tell you what it means, and your barista doesn’t have time to let you know. So what is its definition? Why has the diet become so popular? And could it be the right one for you?
Plant-based means the main source of the food came from plant products opposed to animal products. We tend to think of fruits and vegetables when we hear plants, but don't forget grains such as rice and oats; legumes; nuts; soy…. we’ve got options! It doesn’t mean vegan or vegetarian - you can still consume animal products, just fewer of them.

The benefits of eating a plant-based diet are insurmountable, hence its popularity. Plant foods reduce inflammation as their nutrients neutralize toxins and support your immune system. The positive impact on the environment is one to feel good about as you load your plate with veggies! Vegan and vegetarian diets reduce greenhouse gases and require fewer resources to grow than meat and dairy products. Consider nixing the ground beef and adding sweet potatoes the next time you make chili!
Trying a new diet doesn't have to be uncomfortable or intimidating, especially if you get creative. When was the last time you checked out your spice cabinet? Made a list of your favorite produce and turned it into a recipe? Stocked up on unique grains like barley and farro? If being a chef extraordinaire isn't your thing, start with simple meals like big salads or roasted veggies and brown rice. Have fun with it - experiment with new dressings, cook rice in spices (cumin, paprika, and curry powder work great together), and season those vegetables like there's no tomorrow!
Shifting your focus while planning meals is a big part of your toolbox when working towards more plant-based living. When you look at your diet, is an animal product typically the center of the meal? Bacon and eggs for breakfast and a roast for dinner? If so, try focusing your culinary powers on the plants! How many different veggies will you eat in your meal? Will you include a grain? What plant-based protein can be your main dish?
A plant-based diet isn't about what you can't eat, it's about what you should be eating more of. Doing what’s right for you and your body is crucial, and adding more plant power to your life will never steer you wrong. Now, as my grandma would say - off to the kitchen! Go get those plants! In health and happiness,
